This lecture gives a brief overview of the development experience with the Mondeo side airbag electronics focusing on the introduction of a new generation of accelerometers. Changing to a new accelerometer technology for a volume car manufacturer is a big challenge. The new sensor has obvious design inherent advantages. However a significant amount of testing is required to verify that the sensor fulfils the demanding and partially conflicting requirements of the harsh automotive environment. Even though no field data is available yet in Ford it is assumed, based on the test results, that the sensor guarantees required performance over vehicle lifetime. Higher integration of discrete components improves reliability, quality and cost, but reduces flexibility. An increasing number of electronic modules and functions in safety systems requires additional development and verification efforts. Historically, conventional development tools were sufficient for airbag system development. In addition to that, on more complex safety systems double- and multiple-failure mode scenarios have to be considered. Hence FTA and CAE become increasingly important for development and verification. Since software contributes significantly to product reliability and quality, additional means of software verification, such as software audits, are recommended and have demonstrated their value.
