VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control) system is a new active safety system for road vehicles which controls the dynamic vehicle motion in emergency situations. From the steering angle, the accelerator pedal position and the brake pressure the desired motion is derived while the actual vehicle motion is derived from the yaw velocity and the lateral acceleration. The system regulates the engine torque and the wheel brake pressures using traction control components to minimize the difference between the actual and the desired motion. The slip controller consists of two parts, the brake slip controller and the drive slip controller. Depending on which slip is used, different nominal variables are passed by the VDC to the slip controller. The drive slip controller is used only for the slip control of the driven wheels during driving. Otherwise the brake slip controller is used. The brake slip may also result from engine drag on the driven wheels. In this case also the brake slip controller is used.
