Semi-active suspensions are stable and safe, consume very little power, require a small amount of modification to passive suspensions, and can provide definitely better performance than passive suspensions. In the implementation of semi-active suspensions, the range of controllable damping rate, the number of damping states, and the actuator dynamics of the damping modulation device should be considered. Simulation results showed that the time constant of the damping control device should be less than 10 milliseconds in order to obtain improvement in case of 'true active damping' suspensions over passive suspensions. In addition the range of controllable damping rate should be designed considering the actuator dynamics.
