To improve active safety, a driving-stability control system has been presented which guarantees maximum driving stability within the bounds of what is physically possible. For this purpose the hydraulic system of the ABS was extended to permit active brake intervention at all four wheels. With regard to electronics, additional sensors were required for steering.wheel angle, yaw velocity and lateral acceleration. The control system uses the sensor signals to determine the driving behaviour and compares it to the driver's intention. A further control loop monitors the slip-angle velocity of the vehicle. If the system detects a critical driving situation, it effects correction by dosed braking forces. This automatic intervention is independent of any braking action taken by the driver. With this control braking forces on the outside of a bend can bring a skidding vehicle under control and braking forces on the inside of a bend can force a vehicle to corner instead of lurching straight ahead. Lane-change manoeuvres were performed with low coefficients of road friction to assess the system. The time charts of the tests and evaluation of the slip-angle requirement show that a vehicle follows the specified course when using the stabilisation system, whereas without such a system it becomes unstable or can only be controlled with considerable steering correction. In view of the distinct increase in active safety, driving-stability control systems will achieve a level of significance similar to that of ABS in the long term.
