This paper addresses the cost of a solar charged EV (electric vehicle) and the energy and environmental savings derived from such a system. The analysis determines the energy and environmental savings attributed to the solar charging system in comparison to an EV charged from the utility grid. The solar charging provides an environmental benefit of dollar 335 to dollar 694 per year in avoided pollution when compared to the costs for removing the pollution form the utility power plant. These pollutants include NO(x), SO2 and PM10. Pollution costs savings over the life of the vehicle and charging station (20 years) are nearly dollar 14,000. In addition, solar charging provides an energy cost savings of dollar 312 to dollar 440 per year which generates nearly dollar 9,000 in additional cost savings over the life of the vehicle. The combined savings amounts to dollar 23,000 over the life of the solar charged EV system. Therefore the initial investment of dollar 20,000 for the solar charging system can be recaptured over the life of the system.
