A traffic signal control system which determined optimumly signal parameters (cycles, splits and offsets) of signals for vast traffic signals scattered in a wide area is introduced herewith. Conventional wide area control systems have controlled the traffic signals according to the fixed-time plans previously designed. However, with this practice it is difficult to optimize the traffic signal provided in the traffic network which leads in all the directions. Reasons are that the traffic conditions are dynamic and involve uncertain factors. In addition, the number of the control plan becomes so vast that present computers to process sequentialy are not sufficient to calculate the optimum parameters at the real time. In order to solve these problems, the authors' system enables wide area traffic signals to control at the real time by: 1) Suppressing the expansion of the combination of control plans of traffic signals by Genetic Algorithm, and 2) Operating the above algorithm with the compact-sized parallel computer. As a result of simulation by the actual data, to certify the quantitative effect of the system developed this time, the authors could verify the effects to improve a traffic jam by 10 % or over as compared with the conventional methods.
