In electromagnetic wind tunnels the suspension of a test aircraft is achieved via electromagnetic fields produced by appropriately arranged superconducting gradients coils. These gradient coils produce forces and torques to counterbalance the aerodynamic and gravity forces applied to the model aircraft at the test section of the wind tunnel. For a test aircraft in a wind tunnel with magnetic suspension and balance systems, a decoupling control configuration is proposed. Using the input-output decoupling technique the flight variables are controlled independently at all frequencies and for all aerodynamic and electromagnetic conditions. Well measured electrical variables such as the coil currents are considered as the states of the overall plant. The decoupling controllers are static. The performance of the resulting closed-loop system is quite satisfactory.
