Energy storage requirements for automobiles have been changing over the past several years. This paper discusses those changes and their implications for energy storage, particularly as they apply to double layer capacitors. A brief background on automotive energy storage is described. Current and future performance targets for several possible applications and vehicle architectures are defined. Based on perceived auto industry needs, a preliminary target set of performance and cost requirements has been developed. Using those targets, conclusions are drawn regarding the possible uses for capacitors and the issues attendant to those applications. Finally, the environment, lead time and volume requirements defined by the automotive industry are discussed.
