In the early 70's, when they appeared in the after market, anti-theft systems were only sonorous and their reliability was bad, but their efficiency was considered satisfactory. However, in the 90's, the situation completely changed: the number of car break-ins and burglaries dramatically increased all over Europe and the cost for insurance companies grew in the same way ( + 30 % in 1993). Response from some insurers was clear: they started to require dissuasive premium or simply refuse to insure a risky car, except if it is fitted with an efficient anti theft system. This paper will describe, first, the requirements of the insurance companies which involve OEM electronic systems which immobilize their engine management system. The perfommance of the security system starts from the way to set and unset the device (by remote control, keypad...) and ends to the inviolability of the coded link of the electronics control unit to the device which must be immobilized. This paper will also outline the use of encryption algorithm in the transmission protocols. The use of high power microprocessors will facilitate the integration of these anti theft systems with other body and comfort functions. As a conclusion, the future of tracking systems for stolen cars will be discussed.
