The multiplication of electrical and electronic systems in the interior car transforms the automobile driver position into a complex man-machine system. This increase and improvement in functions can bring risks of distraction to the main driving activity. In order to curb this trend towards a lower degree of safety, the man-machine information and control interfaces at the disposal of the driver should increasingly integrate all the constraints and functional limitations of the human being as biomechanical criteria, visual performances and mental perception. Changes in demography and life style also make it imperative to take into account the specific characteristics of elderly drivers. This research into a higher degree of safety ergonomics involves the development of new generations of better placed controls, whose operating mode is easier to understand and whose user comfort is distinctly improved.
