When the first RDS car radios came on the market in 1988, it was not so obvious that the radio data system would revolutionize the world of (mobile) radio reception. But a look at some statistics clearly shows that the after market share of RDS car radios in Europe is growing very fast. For OEM (original equipment manufacturer) car radios, the slope of this curve is much higher. So it is correct to say, that RDS is the greatest innovation in FM broadcasting since the implementation of the FM stereo. As it can be seen later there is not so much expense on the hardware side. RDS implementations and features are mainly realized with the power of a microcomputer and its software. Grundig has recognized this fact very early and has spent a high performance 8 bit single chip microcomputer from the first RDS car radio generation on.
