One of the areas, where fuzzy logic is a common design technology, is the automotive industry. In Japan, Germany and France, cars with fuzzy logic contolled components already sell very successfully. The reasons are manifold: first, control systems in cars are very complex and involve multiple parameters. Second, the optimization of most systems based on engineering expertise rather than mathematical models. 'Good handling', 'Fahrvergnügen', and 'riding comfort' are optimization goals that cannot be defined mathematically. Third, automotive engineering is very competitive on an international scale. A technology that proves a competitive advantage is soon commonly used. This section shows case studies of fuzzy logic applications in automotive industry. The applications are anti-lock braking (section 2), engine control (section 3), and automatic transmission (section 4). The case study of an antiskid steering system in section 5 illustrates the kind of new solutions in intervehicle dynamics control that fuzzy logic renders possible. The material of this paper is a preprint of the book 'Fuzzy Logic and NeuroFuzzy Applications Handbook' written by the same author.
