Collision avoidance systems that assist in recognition/judgement/operation, and the outlines and issues/problems of individual systems are described. R & D efforts for external environment sensors and new systems have been made in this field over many years to provide new functions for active safety. As a result, their practical applications have begun to sprout in recent years, mainly in the field of commercial vehicles. Technologically, further enhancements of recognition/judgement functions which are to be added to machines, development of the proper redundant system to protect against failure, HMI based on human factors to improve the human-machine co-operation, attainment of low costs, etc. are considered issues to be dealt with in the coming years. Socially, creation of consensus for the user's acceptance of such systems, aggressive activities to provide technological information to the users, etc., will be necessary, and such vehicle systems should be constructed based on the prerequisite that such system co-operate with the traffic infrastructure. A clear determination of roles to be shared between the vehicles and the infrastructure, and development of enhancements are also necessary.
