Mature and emerging technologies for crash detection vehicle location, and mobile communications are evaluated to assess the feasibility of developing an automated collision notification (ACN) system. The conclusion is that an ACN system could be available within the next 5 years. Key technologies that can support ACN include micromachined accelerometers for crash detection, satellite based radio navigation systems such as the Global Positoning System for determining vehicle location, and terrestrial cellular telephone and low-earth orbit satellites for mobile communications.
