Compliance with the Ultra-Low-Emission Vehicle (ULEV) standards will require significant reductions in exhaust emissions, as well as improved emission control durabity. In order to achieve further emission reductions from today's vehicles, advanced vehicle technologies to improve fuel control, fuel automatisation and delivery, and catalytic converter performance will be needed. To reduce the emission deterioration of ULEVs as they age, sophisticated electronic emission controls which can adjust or self-correct for component deterioration will be utilised. Some of today's vehicles already incorporate many of the advanced vehicle technologies. In addition, by monitoring for malfunctioning emission controls, California-required On-Board Diagnostic systems (OBD II) systems will provide added assurance that low in-use emission performance will be maintained throughout the full vehicle life.
