This paper focuses on the problem of scheduling and on AI techniques for tackling it. In particular knowledge-based systems are put forward as a useful technique, because they allow collaboration with a human expert to tackle even the most complex scheduling applications. This is illustrated by means of the SkaiX system which is an expert system developed by Knowledge Technologies for the Belgian Railway organisation SNCB. It supports making duty rosters for train locomotives and train personnel. A first part of the system is now operational and initial tests have demonstrated a considerable optimisation.
