Recently, remarkable progress has been attained in automotive electronics. Electronics progress is an essential element for the improvement of vehicle performance and reliability. Moreover, with electronic systems becoming increasingly sophisticated - leading to an increase in the number of related parts - maintenance and inspection, or failure diagnosis, has become much more complex. Service engineering personnel who actually handle automotive parts cannot keep up with the demanding increase of product knowledge and the increasing sophistication of troubleshooting technology. In this report, the authors will clarify the problems in these service and maintenance technologies which have been generated along with the electronics progress in automobiles. In an effort to overcome these problems, the authors will also introduce a new type of diagnosis tester which will be effectively used in actual service engineering sites as the nucleus of future failure diagnosis. Finally, the authors will consider the future principles of service and maintenance technology.
