In order to improve the starting characteristic for electric vehicle propulsion systems without increasing the cost of the converters, a new method of changing induction motor's stator winding connection is investigated. With this method, the starting torque is increased to twice the rated value while the rating of the inverter is kept to the minimum. In this paper, analysis and computation for different induction motor winding connections are reported. Comparison between the proposed scheme and the conventional one is made through computer simulation to an electric vehicle driven by a 100 hp induction motor.
