Autonomous Intelligent Cruise Control (AICC) is a vehicle-installed system which aids the driver both to keep the desired cruise speed and also to adapt the velocity in order to keep a safe distance to vehicles driven ahead of the host car. It can be operated in either informative or automatic mode; in informative mode the driver receives information whether the distance is safe or too close; in automatic mode the velocity is controlled automatically. The design of the AIC and its control algorithm are discussed. Simulations of varying traffic situations, with the AICC in automatic mode, show that the system handles these situations properly. The system is intended to be extended with road side communication in order to being able to keep the speed limits and pass trafffic lights without stopping.
