It is clear that the slow progress within CEN/TC278/WG9 is having a detrimental effect on the implementation of 5.8 GHz DSRC systems. It is holding up the applications working groups and in particular WG1 which cannot afford the delays since, as already mentioned, there is growing commercial interest for the application of automatic fee collection and access control which is dictating the pace of work in this area. The situation means that users of DSRC systems are currently faced with a dilemma - whether to delay programmes until a standard is set, or whether to make a choice from current supplier offerings and continue activities with a system which may not conform to the eventual standard or may be incompatible with other DSRC infrastructure. Projects like TRICS and the PROMETHEUS SRCTF, which engage a number of suppliers and request interoperable systems, offer DSRC suppliers an alternative opportunity to work together in the pursuit of a much needed standard. Such activities can complement the formal standardisation process by offering the suppliers an informal forum in which to progress the drive towards a DSRC standard for RTI. Systems resulting from such projects may be acceptable to enough suppliers to make them leading contenders for an overall standard.
