This paper describes a novel approach to the improvement of road safety by employing data recorders to assist in modifying driver behaviour. The key features of the system are a microprocessor based vehicle data recorder and an off-board PC based analysis tool that can derive messures of driver performance. By retrospective reporting to the driver, this analysis is then used in an 'educating' feedback manner to enable him to modify and monitor his driving behaviour. The mechanism by which individual drivers utilise this feeback is currently ill-defined but nevertheless available results show that there can be benefits to safer driving. The use of such a system is also seen to have other cost benefits in terms of improved vehicle management.
