For the navigation of aerial vehicles, the authors have demonstrated that a tight coupling between inertia - that brings excellent short term motion measurements - and vision - that provides very accurate updates - proves a very efficient teaming. Thorough evaluations were conducted, and the necessary hardware was developed. In addition to the precision obtained, operational advantages include complete discretion, full autonomy, and resistance to jamming. Furthermore, integration to the aircraft navigation system demands very little extra power, volume and weight. Current studies deal with further refining the algorithms, as well as deriving new uses for these techniques.
