A 400 (H) x 300 (V) resolution miniature color display (MCD) with a pixel density of 300 lpi has been demonstrated for helmet-mounted display (HMD) applications using a subtractive color liquid crystal light valve approach. This approach results in high luminance, and full color at each pixel without the loss in addressable resolution associated with conventional additive color approaches. A stack of three active matrix twisted nematic liquid crystal light valves sandwiching cyan, magenta, and yellow color polarizers is used to generate full color. By spectral tuning of the xenon arc lamp backlight, and the dichroic polarizers, the authors achieved a color gamut comparable to that of a shadowmask color CRT. The MCD produces a 2:1 contrast ratio against a 10000 fL ambient scene, using typical HMD optics.
