Fuzzy control, which is now widely used in a varied number of fields, has also proved its usefulness in automobile engineering, where it can be used to automatically achieve constant speeds and control anti-lock brake systems. As seen in the case of automatic control of plants, where the operator's strategy is complied for the purpose, these systems can only be realized after a knowledge base has been established. Knowledge bases have been based on interviews and questionnaires given to operators and their knowledge in how control devices work. This approach was tended to obtain only the most characteristic knowledge and failed to provide satisfactory control results. In view of this problem, a way is proposed to construct a knowledge base that has the potential for a wide range of applications. It is described how the layers of knowledge have been constructed by applying the fuzzy control to the shift scheduling of automatic transmission cars, and the field test results of the scheduling system by a fuzzy control device are introduced to verify the effectiveness of the aforementioned approach.
