The authors have here presented the extent to which development has proceeded at Japan Storage Battery (JSB) on valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries to be used in electric vehicles (EVs) and photovoltaic power generation systems. With regard to electric vehicles, it has been their intention to meet the practicalization of EVs with VRLA batteries for the time being, and they are working vigorously on the development of a new type of EV-use VRLA battery (granular silica battery) that differs entirely from conventional VRLA batteries. Meanwhile, in relation to photovoltaic power generation systems, the authors have developed the gelled-type VRLA battery (model SRE500) for stand-alone power supply systems under a commission by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). This battery offers promise for use in locations that make maintenance difficult, such as outlying islands and remote mountainous areas. The authors are also working on the development of a VRLA battery for grid connected systems.
