The basic motivation for designing nonlinear active and semi-active vehicle suspension systems is an obvious one - conventional passive suspensions, based on many years of design practice, are intentionally nonlinear; for example, there are performance advantages available from using springs which stiffen under large displacements, and dampers which employ lower rates for compressive motion than for rebound. The aim is to present an outline of a viable design process, applied to a simple linear quarter-vehicle suspension model; while the design objectives implied here are by no means unique, it is quite easy to demonstrate significant performance advantages due to the nonlinear nature of the controller.
