The basis of the mechanical arrangement and control structure of a 1/4 car representation of an electrically actuated hydropneumatic suspension are described. Control law gains for providing closed loop position control of the pump piston are derived using linear stochastic optimal control theory. Performance results are presented higlighting the possible improvements in ride quality. Mean power consumptions are compared for the electrical system with those for a similar performing flow controlled slow-active suspension. Peak Lower electrical requirements are also assessed and conclusions drawn as to the suitability of the system considered for automotive applications. The low bandwidth active suspension, commonly referred to as slow-active, differs in its design detail to the full-active suspension in that the actuator acts in series with a conventional passive spring and it utilises conventional damping between the wheel and body. Thus, control of the body motions is provided by the active element and beyond the bandwidth of the actuator the suspension performs in the same manner as a conventional passive system.
