This paper deals with the problem of understanding natural language specifications in the Space industry. LESD involves two main tasks: extraction and representation of requirements expressed by natural language specifications, and storage and retrieval of those requirements. A parser generates a semantic representation of each requirement. The parsing process requires an adequate semantic lexicon and a knowledge base about the Space domain. A retrieval system, conceived as a reasoning tool for engineers, can find related requirements and test their properties such as traceability. LESD's main focus has been the construction of the semantic lexicon and domain knowledge base, the computational definition of requirements traceability, and the implementation of a set of retrieval and reasoning operations.
