Aerospace computer implementations are entering a new era, characterized by two fundamental trends: significant interst in commercially-based products, designs, and technology, requirements for non-proprietary 'standard' systems that are interoperable and scalable. The primary drivers that appear to motivate these trends, in both military and space systems, are: cost - a result of severely limited budget resources, schedules - need the systems sooner, rapid technology turnover, fear of obsolescence, etc. Designs that satifsy these trends are deemed to be 'open', and will exhibit an 'open system architecture'. Typical features for open and non-open (or 'closed') computer systems will be examined and compared in this paper, and advantages and disadvantages of each approach discussed. Representative examples will be shown for each system approach along with a trade of salient parameters.
