Digital communications requirements for air transport aircraft are rapidly evolving while voice communications remains virtually unchanged since the advent of commercial aviation. Digital communications provide the promise of improved accuracy for air traffic communications while reducing pilot workload. This reduction in workload is currently being demonstrated on experimental system. Satellite communications can now extend digital communications to aircraft anywhere in the world. Development of the Aeronautical Telecommunications Network will provide integration of aircraft systems, air/ground links, ground distribution systems, and ground end systems into a single communications network. While most aircraft communications in the future will be digital, voice will still be required for non-routine situations. Implementation of an integrated voice/data network will provide a totally automatic system meeting all communications requirements.
