The study team was faced with the task of conducting a comprehensive interference study on an automatic railway system to investigate the possible correlation of random intermittent failures with electromagnetic interference. It had to use failure data collected by the operator for purposes other than identifying noise sources and this data had to be sorted to eliminate a variety of irrelevant entries. A database was built dividing all events into various categories which could be attributed to EMI or other phenomena. EMI measurements were carried out and correlations were found between 'auto trips' and irregular high level transient noise on power supplies. Preliminary measurements also verified a postulated correlation between the failures of vehicles to start from stations and noise on signals at the vehicle docking points. The study has demonstrated a useful methodology for use in identifiying the causes of failures due to EMI occurring in otherwise reliable equipment.
