Humanity at the close of the 20th Century faces daunting challenges. These include growing populations, widening economic disparities, inequitable availability of non-renewable terrestrial resources, and mounting environmental stresses resulting from the undesirable impacts of industrialization. All of these challenges threaten to alter Earth's climate and ecology. The solar power satellite (SPS) was proposed over 20 years ago as an option to help mitigate these challenges. Today the SPS is being explored in Europe, Japan, the U.S. and U.S.S.R. There is a growing consensus that the required technology options are known, and could be developed using resources available on Earth and in the solar system. In other words, the current impediments to implementing SPS are primarily economic and societal.
