The feasibility of deploying high temperature superconducting devices and components in space environments is being explored. A variety of devices, mostly passive microwave components, have been procured and will be integrated with a cryogenic refrigeration and data acquisition systems to form a space package which will be launched in the near future. The initial space experiment will demonstrate that this technology is sufficiently robust to survive the launch and the harsh space environment while subsequent experiments will demonstrate the improvement in system performance that can be realized from the utilization of HTS devices, components, and subsystems in space communications systems and platforms.
