This paper discusses the problems associated with speech recognition in Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFVs) and the potential benefits to the crew through the use of speech technology. The Mission Management Techniques Section at RARDE is involved in researching future crewstation design and assessing the techniques and technologies to improve the Man-Machine Interface (MMI). The section has developed a crewstation simulator which is used for this assessment and provides an ideal laboratory based environment for trialling voice systems and developing dialogues to enable the subjects to effectively interact in complex scenarios. The speech technology research in the section is concerned primarily with its application to the MMI and crewstation environment.
