In 1980, the average motor car incorporated virtually no electronics. Many of the vehicles manufactured in 1991 are equipped with one or more microprocessor controlled systems and the more sophisticated as may have around ten microprocessors. The use of complex electronic systems has brought with it the need to ensure that they are immune to the effects of electromagnetic radiation. The vehicle, being inherently mobile, is subjected to quite a hostile electromagnetic environment. This paper will discuss the radiated immunity testing of motor cars including the techniques used to test whole vehicles as well as vehicle systems in isolation. It will also highlight problems that are specific to the motor industry.
