Microwave remote sensing is in the process of developing towards a large scale observation technique that, thanks to the use of space technology, will offer global coverage and one may ask whether these sophisticated satellite imaging systems will outdate other observation techniques or not. In reality it is to be expected that satellites will only stimulate the interest in supporting observations based on either groundbased or airborne sensors. This paper is discussing some examples which may demonstrate this growing need.
