As micro-processor technology is being developed, some conventional mechanical devices of automobile have been replaced by electronic devices using mirror-processors. Specially one of the electronic devices, called ECU (Electronic Control Unit), is used to coated to engine to keep the optimal status. When there is a trouble in the engine, however, it is not easy to diagnose ECU unless the exact and deep knowledge about ECU is provided because the components connected to ECU are functionally so complicatedly related to one another. This paper presents two systems, SALOR and DIASI, which have been developed by our lab. SAILOR is a general-purpose expert system shell running on Sun workstation and DIASI which has been implemented using SAILOR is an expert system for diagnosing the MPI engine controlled by ECU of automobile.
