The use of non-developmental items, the enabling of technology insertion, and common module architectures are all goals of military system architects today. The realization of these goals can only occur if the target systems are not dependent on specific microprocessor, microprocessor interface or software implementations. Military and commercial systems have both increased in levels of integration and performance, although commercial systems at a much faster rate. By taking advantage of the lessons learned with the commercial systems, military systems can avoid many of the incompatibility problems of early 'Commercial Standards'. This paper describes the level of standardization available with IEEE/ANSI-1296 (Multibus II) systems and how this has been used to demonstrate dissimilar architecture, muti-vendor boards communicating across the bus, while using different operating systems. A militarized implementation of this architecture that support commercial to mil-spec transportability of applications is presented.
