A four-wheel-steering (4WS) system has been developed which offers a new level of handling and stability not achievable with a conventional two-wheel steering (2WS) system. To eliminate a 2WS system's disadvantage of the body side slip angle changing continously with the vehicle speed, development work was focused on: 1. Optimized control technology for 4WS. 2. Highly-reliable system-integrating technology. 3. Fail-safe technology. The 4WS system has been realized by making a world's first application of combined mechanical, hydraulic and electronic technologies for continous controlling of rear-to-front steering angle as a function of vehicle speed, thereby assuring an enhanced stability across the entire vehicle speed range. This has brought about drastic improvement in vehicle handling and stability while reducing driver's effort for steering.
