Airborne radars for air defence perform two main roles, namely to provide long-range surveillance or airborne early warning (AEW) and to support the air defence fighter in carrying out airborne intercept (AI). Up to now requirements in both these areas have been met by radars based usually on single high-power microwave transmitting tubes operated in conjunction with mechanically scanned antennas. Future requirements for multi-mode capability in AI radars and for considerable enhancements in performance of AEW radars allied to major advances in solid-state microwave devices and signal processing indicate that the next generation of these radars will be based on active phased-array antennas composed of a large number of low-power transmit/receive modules. The paper will discuss the broad requirements foreseen for future AI and AEW radars, generic aspects of active-array radars, the impact of technological advances and constraints, and the increased capability which will stem from the use of active phased-arrays.
