It is clear that current designs of submarine cable systems will be expected to last for periods in excess of 25 years (from the point of view of stress corrosion, it can be argued that current cable designs are over-conservative). Safety margins are adequate even when operated over long repeater separations in excess of 100 km. This is achieved by careful cable design, selection of materials and fibre specification. However, hermetic fibres and pure silica-core fibres can provide improved safety margins for the future.
