A prototype system interface for airborne workstations that uses simultaneous voice and graphical input/output (I/O) is described. Operators input requests by speaking commands while simulataneously selecting graphical object on the screen. The computer responds with a combination of synthesized speech and graphical output. End-users report that this means of communication is 'natural and intuitive' for accomplishing some operational tasks. Follow-up work relates to utilizing graphical and contextual information to lower speech recognition errors in the noisy and stressful airborne workstation environment.
