In today's automobiles, there are already over 40 places where permanent magnets are used. Most of these are in electric motors and actuators, but there are other sites as well. From what can be seen of the future, automotive uses of permanent magnets will increase drastically. One factor is the increasing computer control over many functions where electrical interfacing is much easier to accomplish. Vacuum power, which has been used in the past, is less available with the trend toward smaller engines. Also the precentage of engine power required for accesory loads is increasing rapidly. As the power demands increase, the efficiency of these components becomes extremely important. This presentation will review the present benefits of a family of new magnetic material alloys that are being developed to address the needs of future automotive brushless motors, actuators and sensors.
