Electromagnetic, or Radio Frequency, Interference can have devastating effects upon electronic circuitry not provided with adequate protection. The corruption of digitally processed data by EMI-related phenomena can have effects on vehicle management and safety systems that can ultimately threaten the lives of driver and passenger. The need for improved protection in todays high technology automotive electronic systems is being dictated not only by our increasingly polluted electromagnetic environment, but by the change from metal enclosures (with their inherent EMI protection) to the more cost effective plastic moulded enclosure. Recent developments in shielding technology has seen the introduction of a technique for metallising plastic enclosures, based upon the well proven Electroless Plating process, as has been used for many years in the automotive industry for decorative purposes. This paper will attempt to introduce the designer to the benefits of the electroless EMI shielding process for plastic.
