During the last few years, the interest in radio communication to aircraft via satellites has increased strongly. The primary goal is to use digital satellite communication in the 1.5 GHz range as a replacement for unreliable HF links currently employed. Using this technique, for example, it is possible to determine the position of aircraft in regions where there is no radar coverage. This, of course, enables improved air traffic control. Furthermore, passengers will be able to transmit telegrams inflight via satellite, and airlines will be able to exchange data with the flight crew; even the introduction of regular telephone service with the public telephone network is being prepared. This paper presents a generalized Rician-fading model of the aeronautical satellite channel based on data acquired during a number of measurement flights. This model can be used to evaluate the performance of digital transmission systems. An important part of any transmission system is the modulation scheme, and from the variety of possible modulation schemes, DPSK is chosen for further consideration. Not only is DPSK very robust in the fading encountered on the aeronautical channel, its short acquisition time compared to coherent reception makes it particularly advantageous for the transmission of short data packets such as aircraft position reports. Using the aeronautical channel model mentioned, new bit error rate expressions for 2 and 4 DPSK were derived and are discussed here.
