Systems supporting guidance and services on the road will be heavily determined by the environment of operation and by the variety of applications. Another essential question will be the introduction, if some cooperation between car and car is needed and if some infrastructure on the roadside is required. If guidance and services shall be offered principally on every kind of road and in every traffic situation, then the transmission of electromagnetic waves will suffer from reflexions, scatter and shadowing. In such an environment a powerful system is needed to meet these applications, which are presently under discussion. Aviation applies transponder-techniques for surveillance and distance measurement. Presently discrete adressed systems are going to be standardized and introduced, which will cover both position finding and individual communication even in dense traffic and will save the precious radiofield load. In addition to that these systems deliver a basis for collision avoidance systems. Involved in this process TU BS considered in particular discrete adressed systems for application in a road environment, because it was felt, that this technique meets a couple of traffic specific requirements.
