It is some 30 years since the last new submarine propulsion motor was designed by the GEC Group for the twin-screw 'O' Boat class currently in use with the British, and other navies. The successor to this class is the SSK 2400 Patrol Class submarine which has a large double-amature single-screw d.c. propulsion unit. The requirement is for a motor with minimum size and weight, high efficiency, resistance to shock, low noise and vibration signature, and with minimum maintenance. The new submarine is scheduled to go into service soon, using a motor designed and manufactured by GEC ALSTHOM Large Machines Ltd.
