To achieve optical fibre cables with lifetimes and transmission stability similar to those of metallic conductor cables the sensitivity of optical fibres has been addressed to provide protective cable constructions. The effects of lightning strikes to and around a cable are considered. Experiments are desdribed which show the damage which can occur to the armour and core of a cable from circulating currents and simulated direct lightning strikes. Finally cable construction used by British Rail is described and the requirements for cables in tunnels is discussed.
