A type of the magnetic wheel is utilized for the HSST maglev system. A short stator of the single-sided linear induction motor (SLIM) is integrated into it with four staggered magnets. The lateral guidance system of the wheel is studied. Especially the lateral motion of SLIM is analyzed in details and its influence on the lateral guidance control system is evaluated. The control model of the system is derived, assuming SLIM is regulated with the inverters, output voltage and frequency of which is based on the constant slip frequency and current control principle. The analytical study shows that the interaction between SLIM and magnets is not significant under such conditions. It also is verified with the experimental data obtained by the tests in Vancouver with HSST-03. If SLIM and second ary rail are optimized in design, the lateral side force of SLIM could be used as the stabilizing force which helps the guidance control system.
