The paper sets out to discuss how the aeronautical terminal specifications issued by various system providers affect the design of compliant equipments. This is accomplished by reviewing the major points of the contending specifications and by discussing the numerous constraints imposed upon the equipment by the aircraft environment. The effects of these constraints and of the specifications are then considered in detail for the specific cases of the antenna, LNA and HPA location, local oscillator stability and modem implementation. The paper continues with a brief review of the various perceived applications for such equipments and a description of a modular terminal concept currently under development. A few concluding remarks are then presented.
